Meet The Servant Leadership Institute Team

It’s not just about teaching the principles of servant leadership at the Servant Leadership Institute—it’s about living and breathing those principles every day.

Each and every member of the Servant Leadership Institute team, from our Founder and CEO Art Barter to our trainers and administrators, is passionate about serving first.

 Art Barter

Art Barter

Founder & CEO, Servant Leadership Institute
Owner & CEO, Datron World Communications, Inc.

Art Barter started his journey with servant leadership, by bringing servant leadership to his company, Datron World Communications. After purchasing Datron in 2004, he implemented a "serve first" approach, catapulting the company's worth from $10 million to $200 million in just six years.

Wanting to share with other leaders what he learned at Datron, Art founded the Servant Leadership Institute in 2010.

In 2015, Art was recognized as a Top 30 leader at the John C. Maxwell Leadership Awards. He has also been named by the Trust Across America organization as a Trust Top Thought Leader in both 2017 and 2018.

He loves seeing the professional and personal lives of the people he works with change and evolve as a result of the servant leadership mindset.

 Robin Swift

Robin Swift

President

Robin Swift works tirelessly to share the "serve first" mentality in her role as president of the Servant Leadership Institute.

One of her most powerful servant leadership experiences involved working with Art to provide a nearby company with a vacant space in the SLI building when this company experienced a fire. She witnessed their disbelief when Art Barter and the rest of the team didn't ask for anything in return.

Every time a servant leader steps up, it's a powerful thing, which is what keeps her returning to servant leadership time and time again.

A Servant Leadership Moment: Last Christmas Datron adopted an aged out foster youth that had been kicked out of his home at the age of 18 with no basic support. Luckily he found North County Lifeline and is now on a path of self-sufficiency and living in an apartment. When we received his Christmas wish list it was all about school supplies (he was attending Mira Costa), basic hygiene items, a blanket, a towel (not a set but one towel), bus pass and gift cards to grocery stores. I went back to the counselor and asked if there was a Santa Claus what would this young man ask for? She said he would ask for an x-box so he could get the guitar program and also other games to have fun and relax. Datron employees stepped up and provided all the basic needs as well as an x-box with programs! The young man was blown away that strangers would do something that generous.

A Servant Leadership moment: Not long after joining the company, I had to pick up my son in the middle of the work day. Nervously pondering what to do with him for the remainder of the day, I picked him up from camp, and returned to the office. Upon entering the building, I ran into our CEO at the elevator. After a quick introduction to my son, our CEO looked me in the eye and said, “Today, your priority is him (my son), not me. Take care of him.” What a relief! Even our CEO exhibits the behavior “Live Your Values”, in which value number one is “Our families come first.” Such a change from what previous companies expected!
